Israeli businessman Rami Ungar celebrated his birthday, looking back at an extraordinary career that transformed a small agricultural ventilation business into a multi-billion-dollar global empire spanning automotive imports, international shipping, and real estate. With an estimated personal fortune of about $4 billion, Ungar stands among Israel's wealthiest individuals, maintaining a notably low public profile despite his vast economic reach.

From Poultry Farms to the Kia Empire

Born and raised in northern Tel Aviv, Ungar served in the IDF as an intelligence communications officer and earned a law degree from Tel Aviv University. He launched his business career in the late 1960s by importing ventilation systems for chicken coops. He soon expanded into automotive imports, bringing Italian brands Autobianchi and Lancia to Israel, followed by Daihatsu. In the late 1980s, he acquired control of Talcar, which later became a major force in the Israeli automotive sector.

A significant turning point occurred in 2008 when Talcar secured the exclusive franchise to import South Korea's Kia vehicles into Israel. Kia quickly grew into one of the country's dominant automotive brands, cementing Ungar's financial standing. However, securing and maintaining dominance involved friction, including a prolonged legal dispute with former Kia importer Michael Levy, which concluded in Ungar's favor in 2004.

Global Fleet and a Billion-Dollar Order

While publicly identified with the automotive sector, a core pillar of Ungar's business operates on the high seas. Through Ray Shipping, his international maritime transport company, he manages a vast fleet of massive roll-on/roll-off vessels chartered to global shipping giants. In recent years, the company's fleet has exceeded 60 vessels transporting vehicles worldwide.

In August 2026, Ray Shipping placed an order in Chinese shipyards for approximately ten new vessels valued at over $1 billion. Each ship is capable of carrying more than 8,500 vehicles, with delivery scheduled through 2029. This massive investment capitalizes on soaring vehicle exports from China, further expanding Ungar's global maritime footprint.

Real Estate and Vitania Holdings

Beyond vehicles and shipping, Ungar holds substantial real estate assets in Israel, Eastern Europe, and the United States. He is also a founding partner of the Fair Real Estate Fund. In 2021, he purchased a prime plot in Herzliya Pituah for roughly 105 million NIS, but his most prominent real estate maneuver involves the publicly traded firm Vitania.

By October 2026, Talcar held a 63.63% stake in Vitania, valued at approximately 458 million NIS based on market trading data. This positioned Ungar as the undisputed controlling shareholder of the real estate company, despite fluctuations and downward pressures on Vitania's stock market valuation.

The Galaxy Leader Hijacking and Regional Conflict

Ungar's business empire intersected with the Middle East conflict in November 2023, when Houthi rebels in Yemen seized the car carrier Galaxy Leader, a vessel linked to his shipping interests. The Bahamas-flagged ship was hijacked in the Red Sea while sailing from Egypt to India, and its 25 multinational crew members were taken hostage.

The crew members were held for over a year before being released in January 2025 as part of arrangements accompanying the Gaza Strip ceasefire. The vessel itself remained in Houthi hands, turned into a propaganda site. In July 2025, the Israeli Air Force struck the ship in Yemen after the IDF reported the Houthis had installed surveillance systems on board to track Red Sea shipping.

Family and Philanthropy

Residing in Kfar Shmaryahu with his wife Yael, Ungar maintains a private family life while his relatives participate in his corporate operations. He is widely known for his extensive philanthropic contributions to medical centers, educational institutions, and cultural bodies, including Ichilov Hospital, Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, Tel Aviv University, the Massuah Holocaust Institute, and the Cameri Theatre, alongside supporting IDF units.
