Netanyahu State Comptroller Nominee Michael Rabiello Withdraws from Race
Advocate Michael Rabiello, Benjamin Netanyahu's nominee for State Comptroller, has withdrawn from future runs, clearing the path for retired Supreme Court Justice Yosef Elron amid shifting political majorities.

Advocate Michael Rabiello, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's nominee for State Comptroller, has decided not to run again for the position in upcoming elections expected after the swearing-in of the new Knesset, according to sources. Behind the decision lies the realization that, given the loss of the coalition's majority, his chances of election are low. Furthermore, the coalition is reluctant to oppose retired Supreme Court Justice Yosef Elron, whose prospects of winning are significantly higher.
Background of the Crisis
The nomination controversy evolved into a major constitutional crisis following an initial Knesset vote where Elron received 60 votes and Rabiello received 57. Because the law requires an absolute majority of at least 61 Knesset members, a second round was triggered. Reports emerged that coalition members were required to photograph their secret ballots to prove they voted for Rabiello. Following petitions, the High Court of Justice ruled the process flawed and ordered a re-vote, which the coalition initially rejected.
Legal Standing and Future Outlook
Close associates of Rabiello noted that despite orchestrated campaigns targeting him over alleged conflicts of interest due to his legal representation of Netanyahu and the Likud, the Supreme Court unanimously rejected the petitions. Rabiello maintained that the initial High Court ruling should be implemented immediately within the current Knesset, though his position was overruled. The 26th Knesset is scheduled to be sworn in on November 10, raising questions over whether it will repeat only the second round or open the race to new candidates.
