Those expecting significant changes to the appearance of the Apple Watch this year will likely need to lower their expectations. According to the latest report by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is approaching the final testing stages of the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 models. Contrary to rumors regarding a new design, the company is choosing to focus on what is under the hood this time around.
According to the report, Apple is testing the Series 12 model in both Wi-Fi and cellular versions, alongside the Ultra 4. Meanwhile, it appears that the Apple Watch SE will not receive a refresh this year, following the launch of its third generation just last year.
Gurman notes that Apple is not planning a "major design overhaul" for the upcoming models. Instead, the emphasis is on performance improvements, with new chips designed to provide higher speeds alongside upgrades to health and fitness capabilities. While it remains unclear which specific features will be added, the report indicates that the company is prioritizing the improvement of the daily user experience over external modifications.
This move is not particularly surprising. The last significant processor upgrade occurred in 2023 with the introduction of the S9 chip, and Apple now appears to be preparing a new generation of hardware to deliver another performance leap.
However, those seeking more dramatic changes will likely not be disappointed forever. Gurman notes that Apple is already working on a "rethinking" of its watch lineup, but this is not expected to materialize for another year or two.
