Unprecedented Punishment in Brazilian League for Violent Foul

The Brazilian league match between Internacional and Cruzeiro did not seem particularly remarkable at first. The visitors won 2:1 after the hosts were reduced to ten men in the 59th minute, following a straight red card shown to Victor Gabriel for a brutal foul on opponent Gabriel Pec.

While the serious injury to Pec, who was left bleeding on the pitch, might have been treated as a routine disciplinary matter, the Brazilian Football Confederation tribunal decided to take a different approach, setting a precedent with an original punishment.

Victor Gabriel appeared before the tribunal alongside his team's representatives, fully aware that a heavy penalty awaited him. However, the Internacional player expected a suspension of no more than three to four matches, especially after he rushed to issue a public apology to Pec for the challenge.

The judges, however, opted for a punishment based on the principle of "an eye for an eye." While no one suggested injuring Victor Gabriel in return, the tribunal ruled that he would be barred from returning to the pitch until Pec has fully recovered and returned to play himself—a rehabilitation process estimated to take between four and six months.

The punishment was determined under Article 254 of the Brazilian Football Confederation's regulations. While the article typically defines a suspension of up to six matches for particularly violent offenses, the prosecutor successfully argued for the activation of a subsection stating that if an injured player is sidelined for an extended period, the offender shall be subject to a suspension for a parallel duration.
