State Attorney Closes Investigation Against Musician Yuval Vilner
The State Attorney's Office has closed the sexual assault investigation against Tel Aviv musician Yuval Vilner, citing insufficient evidence. Complainant Shai-Li Atary criticized the decision.
Four years after the initial complaint was filed, the State Attorney's Office has decided to close the investigation against 38-year-old Tel Aviv musician Yuval Vilner. Vilner had been publicly identified in May as the suspect in rape allegations brought forward by Shai-Li Atary and Naama Shahar.
Legal Responses and Case Closure
Attorney Moshe Weiss, representing Vilner, responded to the decision by stating: "We welcome the decision of the State Attorney's Office. There is only one truth, and the truth has come to light."
In contrast, Shai-Li Atary strongly criticized the decision to close the case due to evidentiary limitations.
"The lack of evidence is not proof that no crime was committed, and the gap in my memory is not proof of consent. On the contrary: the very thing taken from me that night—the ability to remember—has now become the thing that denies me justice."
Background of the Allegations
The case began roughly four years ago when Atary filed a police complaint alleging that Vilner had raped her in 2011 while the two were studying at the Rimon School of Music. Following the publication of his name as the suspect, Atary wrote about the prolonged psychological toll of keeping the alleged assault secret for over a decade while the suspect maintained his life and career.
Legal experts note that cases involving suspected drug-facilitated sexual assault often face significant hurdles in court due to the passage of time and the difficulty of gathering corroborating forensic evidence years after the alleged incidents.
