A scientific breakthrough in China has solved a long-standing physics mystery: researchers have definitively proven the existence of a new type of matter never before seen in nature. The achievement follows 15 years of research building on nearly five decades of theoretical study.

A scientific breakthrough in China has solved a long-standing physics mystery: researchers have definitively proven the existence of a new type of matter never before seen in nature. The achievement follows 15 years of research building on nearly five decades of theoretical study.
The world around us is built from atoms, which include protons and neutrons. These are composed of quarks held together by particles called gluons, which serve as a form of nuclear "glue."
For decades, theoretical physics models suggested that this glue could bind to itself, creating a completely independent particle containing no ordinary matter. Despite this hypothesis, no one had previously managed to prove it experimentally.
An international team of researchers led by China, working with a particle accelerator, has now succeeded in this task. After discovering a mysterious particle named X(2370) in 2011, the team measured its quantum properties in 2024 and identified the central characteristic that distinguishes a glueball from ordinary particles. In doing so, the scientists confirmed that the particle is indeed composed of a pure glueball, presenting the clearest experimental result ever recorded in this field.
