Police Pursuit in Umm al-Fahm Ends in Shooting Following Driver Confrontation
A police pursuit on Route 65 ended in Umm al-Fahm with officers shooting at a fleeing driver after a physical confrontation. Police protocols regarding vehicle chases are under review.
A high-speed police pursuit that began Thursday on Route 65 near Wadi Ara ended in Umm al-Fahm with officers opening fire on the driver of a sports car. According to police sources, two motorcycle officers spotted a vehicle equipped with flashing lights and ordered the driver to stop, but he accelerated and fled the scene.
Pursuit and Confrontation
"He wouldn't stop, started playing with them, tried to escape and ram other vehicles," a police official stated. The chase continued into Umm al-Fahm until the vehicle became trapped in a traffic jam. Officers dismounted and approached the car after seeing the driver reaching inside. According to police, the driver then stepped out and attacked one of the officers, allegedly attempting to seize his weapon. Fearing for his life, the officer opened fire. No weapon was found during a subsequent search of the vehicle.
Legal Regulations on Police Pursuits
Under Israeli law, police are authorized to pursue fleeing vehicles, but this power is not unlimited. According to police protocol AGAM 221.110.01, vehicular pursuits are restricted to specific circumstances and require a careful balance between apprehending a suspect and public safety. The protocol dictates that a failure to stop does not automatically justify high-risk pursuits, and officers must weigh factors such as traffic density, road conditions, and the severity of the suspected offense before continuing.
