Police Arrest Car Theft Ring in South as National Vehicle Larceny Drops 27%
Police arrested four members of a car theft ring in the Lachish region. The arrests come as national statistics reveal a 27% drop in vehicle thefts compared to the same period in 2024.
Four suspects were arrested over the weekend in a joint operation conducted by the Lachish District Central Unit (YAMAR), the SAAR unit, and detectives from the Ashkelon police station. The suspects are believed to belong to a car theft ring operating in the Lachish region.
The operation was launched following intelligence indicating that a burglary crew from East Jerusalem had arrived in Gedera to commit property crimes. During the operation, forces identified a vehicle suspected of leading the crew. Following a pursuit, the driver was stopped and arrested on Route 3 near Yesodot.
Arrests in Gedera and Yesodot
Subsequently, a second suspect, a resident of Judea and Samaria, was arrested on suspicion of involvement in vehicle thefts. Shortly thereafter, a third suspect was apprehended for the alleged theft of a Toyota Auris.
During foot patrols in Gedera, officers located a fourth suspect, an illegal resident from Tulkarm, who is also suspected of being part of the ring. All suspects were taken to the police station for further questioning. The initial investigation suggests that the ring operated across multiple locations in the Lachish district and is linked to several recent car thefts.
National Car Theft Rates Drop by 27%
Against the backdrop of these arrests, a police official released national crime statistics for the period between January 1 and August 23, 2026, showing a significant decline in major property offenses:

Car thefts: dropped by 27% compared to the same period in 2024, falling from 13,373 cases to 9,828.

Business burglaries: decreased by 12%, from 3,385 cases to 2,965.
