Pirlo Responds to Controversy: "My Love for Italy Does Not Depend on Anything"

Andrea Pirlo has responded for the first time to the storm surrounding his candidacy for the position of Italy national team coach, which was damaged by his ties to the Russian betting company "Fonbet". In a statement published on his Instagram account, the Italian football legend clarified that the collaboration was purely commercial, and emphasized:
"My love for Italy does not depend on one role or another."
Pirlo, who was considered the leading candidate for the position after Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola refused the offer, has been at the center of criticism in recent days. The storm erupted after it was revealed that he serves as a global ambassador for the Russian betting company and even participated in an event for the company in Moscow in May. In Italy, it should be noted, advertising gambling is prohibited by law.
"With great sadness, I have watched in recent days the discussion that has developed around my name and the possibility of my appointment as coach of the Italy national team," wrote Pirlo. "Out of respect for the institutions, the federation, and all those involved, I chose to remain silent until now, but I feel it is right to clarify some points."
According to him, throughout his career, as a player and as a coach, he has always acted in accordance with the laws of the countries where he worked and in accordance with the contracts he signed.
"The professional collaboration that is at the center of the controversy was born within the framework of my work in the UAE, and it is of a purely commercial and sporting nature," he clarified. "To attribute political meaning to it is to attribute to me beliefs that I have never expressed and that I do not hold."
Pirlo also used the message to thank the technical director of the Italian federation, Paolo Maldini, and Leonardo, who supported his candidacy:
"I want to thank Paolo Maldini and Leonardo for the honor and trust they have given me. I know their professionalism, seriousness, and love for Italian football."
"I regret that a professional choice in the world of sports has quickly drifted into a public debate, in which they attributed to me meanings and intentions that are simply not mine."
He concluded his words with a clear message: "My love for Italy does not depend on one role or another. It is part of my history, of my identity, and it will always remain with me."
Although Pirlo did not officially announce that he is withdrawing his candidacy, in Italy it is estimated that the chances of him being appointed as the national team coach are zero following the affair. According to reports, the Italian federation may now examine other candidates for the position, while there is also a fear that Maldini himself will consider his future if he does not succeed in appointing the coach he supported.
