Philadelphia Pro-Palestinian Activist Exposed After Lying About Identity
A prominent Philadelphia pro-Palestinian activist has been exposed for lying about being of Palestinian and Black descent, when she is actually a white Jewish woman.
A prominent pro-Palestinian activist from Philadelphia has found herself at the center of a major controversy in the United States after it was revealed that she lied about her heritage for years, pretending to be of Palestinian descent and a member of the Black community. In reality, she is entirely white, of Jewish heritage, and has Israeli family members living in what are described as settlements. Two organizations of which she was a member, having exposed her falsehoods, announced they were severing all ties with her over what they termed a betrayal.
The activist, Hannah Gahn, is a teacher at The Workshop School in Philadelphia and a longtime member of the Racial Justice Organizing Committee (RJOC) and Philadelphia Educators for Palestinian Freedom (PEFP). Since the October 7 terror attacks and the outbreak of the Swords of Iron war, she positioned herself at the forefront of educational and activist efforts for Palestinians in Philadelphia. According to testimonies, she regularly presented herself as a young woman of Palestinian origin with roots in the Black community, claiming at times that her grandfather was born in Palestine, though he was actually born in Baltimore.
Exposure and Backlash from Organizations
Her falsehoods came to light following information received by RJOC and PEFP. Over the weekend, the two organizations issued a joint statement announcing they were cutting ties with her after discovering she had "lied completely regarding her identity and origins." The organizations stated they had asked Gahn to publicly admit she is a white woman of Jewish heritage from a "family of Israeli settlers." They emphasized, "We will no longer work with Hannah, and she will no longer be welcome in any of our organizing spaces."
In the United States, some have already dubbed Gahn the "Palestinian Rachel Dolezal," drawing parallels to the former civil rights activist and African-American studies lecturer who was at the center of a similar scandal a decade ago. Dolezal spent years presenting herself as a Black woman before her parents revealed she was a white woman of European descent.
Apology and Public Reaction
Following the backlash, Gahn posted a video on her Instagram account apologizing for her actions. She stated: "One of the most infuriating aspects of dealing with what I have done is seeing how the harsh reactions hurt people, groups, communities, and causes that I truly care about." Critics, however, pointed out that her apology allows her to retreat back into the white privilege she utilized throughout her activism, whereas genuine minority activists cannot simply shed their identities when facing scrutiny or hostility.
