Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison in New York Retrial
Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years in prison in New York following his retrial for the sexual assault of Miriam Haley, a case that helped ignite the #MeToo movement.
Former movie producer and convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein was sentenced on Wednesday to 15 years in prison for a serious sexual assault charge. The sentencing follows his conviction for sexually assaulting Miriam Haley, a former television production assistant, and concludes a legal battle spanning more than six years. Weinstein's initial 2020 conviction was overturned, but a retrial last year resulted in a new guilty verdict by a jury.
Downfall of a Hollywood Mogul
Once one of the most powerful figures in the entertainment industry, Weinstein was an Oscar-winning producer behind acclaimed films such as "Shakespeare in Love", "Pulp Fiction", and "Chocolat". His rapid downfall began in 2017 when numerous allegations of sexual misconduct were exposed, catalyzing the global #MeToo movement. In 2024, New York’s highest court overturned Weinstein’s conviction and ordered a new trial, ruling that his rights were compromised because testimony was allowed from women whose allegations were not part of the formal charges.

Weinstein, 74, faced up to 25 years in prison for the 2006 assault against Haley in his Manhattan apartment. He has already served more than six years behind bars as the case wound its way through various appellate courts. Haley delivered powerful testimony during both trials and addressed the court shortly before the sentencing.
Sentencing and Apology
Minutes after Haley's statement, Weinstein offered an apology in court to anyone he may have harmed. Sitting in a wheelchair, he told the judge that he felt remorse for the pain caused to Miriam Haley, while maintaining his innocence. Alongside the New York sentence, Weinstein is also serving a 16-year prison term in California for a separate rape conviction.
