A powerful explosion struck a mosque near a police compound in northwestern Pakistan on Friday, leaving at least 16 people dead and 57 others injured, according to police and rescue officials. The attack occurred amid a surge of violence in the region as security forces conduct counter-militancy operations.
The blast took place in Kohat, a district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan. According to district police chief Zulfikar Hamid, a suicide bomber is believed to have driven an explosives-laden vehicle into the mosque. Bilal Faizi, a senior rescue official, stated that hospital authorities confirmed five police officers and 11 civilians were killed, with most of the wounded being worshippers, some in critical condition.
Gunbattle and Casualties
At least seven militants also attempted to enter the police compound, sparking a fierce firefight with officers. Police reported that six of the attackers were killed during the exchange. Images from the scene showed the exterior wall of the police offices collapsed and the mosque heavily damaged, with thick smoke billowing over the area following the explosion, which residents said was heard from a great distance.
"We are working tirelessly to rescue the injured and ensure the security of the area," local authorities stated as rescue operations continued.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the bombing, expressed deep sorrow over the casualties, and ordered authorities to accelerate rescue operations. While no group immediately claimed responsibility, suspicion is expected to fall on the Pakistani Taliban, formally known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Regional Tensions and Background
The attack occurred a day after a roadside bomb targeted a security forces convoy in the nearby Hangu district, killing six soldiers. Meanwhile, government forces conducted counter-terrorism raids on Thursday, killing 10 militants suspected of belonging to the TTP. The Pakistani Taliban has significantly escalated its attacks against security personnel and civilians in recent years, compounding regional instability.
