Israeli Opposition Leaders Present United Front, Yet Skip Leadership Question
Opposition leaders released a joint photo and strategic roadmap against Benjamin Netanyahu's government, though the crucial question of who will lead the bloc remains unresolved.
Leaders of the emerging opposition bloc have decided to put their differences aside, publishing a joint photograph for the first time to project a united and powerful front against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The image is accompanied by a strategic principles document outlining the opposition's roadmap for replacing the current leadership.
According to the document, the bloc leaders agreed on several key measures, including a coordinated effort to increase voter turnout among their base, a non-aggression pact to prevent friendly fire during the campaign, the formation of a professional working team to draft baseline policies for the next government, and close media cooperation. They also pledged to combat fake news and smear campaigns.
However, despite this display of harmony, the agreement conspicuously omits the most volatile and sensitive issue of all: the mechanism for selecting the bloc leader. At this stage, there is no reference to how a consensus candidate to form the government will be chosen in the event of a victory.
As previously reported, the leadership question continues to bubble beneath the surface. Recently, Gadi Eisenkot declared in an interview that he aims to secure 65 mandates for the bloc and expressed full confidence that Naftali Bennett would recommend him for the premiership. Now, as the bloc attempts to project unity through documents and photos, it remains to be seen whether the question of leadership will ultimately disrupt their plans.
