October 7, 2023, is etched in the national memory as a day of profound tragedy, yet it also gave rise to extraordinary acts of human spirit, courage, and mutual aid.

Rachel Edri and the Power of Coolness

When terrorists broke into the home of Rachel and David Edri in Ofakim and held them hostage for 15 hours, Rachel displayed immense psychological resilience. Calmly, she served the terrorists coffee, cookies, and meals, conversed with them in their language, and bought precious time. Simultaneously, she secretly signaled to the Yamam counter-terrorism forces outside regarding the number of terrorists. Thanks to her resourcefulness, the forces executed a precise rescue operation, saving her and her husband.

Superintendent Moran Dadon and the Battle of Ofakim

Superintendent Moran Dadon, commander of the Ofakim police station, rushed into the streets with a small team upon receiving the first reports. Engaging in fierce face-to-face combat against heavily armed terrorists, Moran and her unit halted the assault and prevented the attackers from penetrating deeper into the city, risking their lives to rescue civilians.

The Elhanan and Menachem Kalmanson Rescue Team

Realizing the scale of the disaster, Elhanan Kalmanson, his brother Menachem, and their nephew Itiel drove from Otniel straight into the inferno at Kibbutz Be'eri. For 14 hours under heavy fire, "Team Elhanan" moved from house to house in an armored vehicle, rescuing over 100 residents, including infants, the elderly, and entire families. Elhanan was mortally wounded during the final rescue, but his team's heroism saved an entire community.

Ben Shimonay and the Nova Party Rescues

Ben Shimonay attended the Nova music festival in Re'im. When the attack began, he chose not to flee for safety alone, instead using his jeep as a mobile shelter. Ben drove back into the combat zone four separate times, filling his vehicle with fleeing youth and driving them to safety. On his fourth trip, he was ambushed by terrorists and killed in action.

Amit Mann: The Paramedic of Be'eri

Amit Mann, a 22-year-old paramedic from Kibbutz Be'eri, rushed to the kibbutz clinic as soon as the attack began. For hours under siege and heavy gunfire, she treated dozens of wounded individuals, fighting for their lives despite a severe shortage of medical supplies and active terrorist encirclement. Amit fought for civilian lives until her final moments.
