Netanyahu orders expulsion of Airports Authority union leader from Likud
Against the backdrop of disruptions at Ben Gurion Airport, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the expulsion of the chairman of the Israel Airports Authority workers' committee from the Likud party. The party characterized the strike as "wild and illegal."
The Likud party announced that Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the expulsion of the chairman of the Israel Airports Authority workers' committee following what they termed "the wild and illegal strike at the airport that harmed the country's citizens and caused damage to the economy."
Pinchas Idan, 70, has headed the Israel Airports Authority workers' committee almost continuously since 1986. The committee he leads represents about 6,000 employees and is considered one of the most powerful in the economy, in no small part due to the fact that it indirectly holds the key to the operation of Israel's central aerial gateway. Idan is a member of the Likud central committee. In 1998, he was elected mayor of Lod, a position he held for only about two years, after which he returned to head the committee. Later, he also competed for a spot on the Likud list for the Knesset and reached 19th place in the 2019 primaries in the Shfela district, but eventually withdrew his candidacy.
