New destination: The Asian country to which Israel will export citrus fruits
The Ministry of Agriculture has completed the process with authorities in Cambodia, and starting from the upcoming export season, Israeli farmers will be able to market citrus fruits there. The Citrus Growers Organization estimates the potential at approximately 10,000 tons per year.
The agricultural market in Asia is expanding for local growers: The Plant Protection and Inspection Services at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security have completed the professional process with authorities in Cambodia to open the country as a new export destination for Israeli citrus fruits. Following this move, starting from the upcoming export season, farmers and exporters from Israel will be able to market oranges, clementines, lemons, grapefruits, and pomelos to Cambodia.
The Citrus Growers Organization in Israel estimates the export potential to this destination at approximately 10,000 tons per year. According to the Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Oren Lavie, the move is intended to strengthen the competitiveness of farmers.
«We are working to open new markets and remove export barriers. More markets for the Israeli farmer mean stronger local agriculture, increased production and supply, and more competitive prices within Israel as well.»
The agreement with Cambodia is part of a broader effort to expand agricultural exports to the Far East, which includes supporting the participation of exporters in international exhibitions. This year, the ministry, together with the Israel Export Institute, promoted the participation of Israeli exporters in the Asia Fruit Logistica exhibition, one of the central exhibitions in Asia for agricultural produce. At the same time, as part of the cooperation with Japan, the ministry is promoting the opening of the market for additional Israeli produce as well, including watermelons, melons, and gourds.
