Dramatic move: Donald Trump on the path to another major victory in the crypto market
The Senate Republican leader has initiated a decisive vote on the "Transparency Act," which proposes the first comprehensive federal rulebook for cryptocurrency regulation. The bill represents a significant policy and economic victory for the US President but is sparking a political storm and fierce opposition from the banking sector.

The US Senate Majority Leader, Republican John Thune, made a dramatic move over the weekend to advance a key bill that seeks to create, for the first time, a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. According to a report from the Senate Press Gallery, Thune filed a request to schedule a decisive procedural vote on the "Transparency Act" immediately upon the Senate's return from its August recess in mid-September. This step could pave the way for a full floor vote, with the passage of the law expected to mark a major policy victory for US President Donald Trump and the entire crypto industry.
Thune's move signals that the Republican leadership in the Senate believes it can muster the 60 votes needed to pass the legislation, despite ongoing opposition from many Democrats. For the bill to pass, it must gain the support of at least eight Democratic senators alongside the full support of all voting Republican senators.
The essence of the legislation is to provide the first comprehensive federal rulebook in the history of the crypto market. The planned law will clearly define when digital currencies are considered securities versus commodities and will establish which regulatory bodies will oversee them. Crypto companies emphasize that the law is essential for legal clarity and may incentivize the expansion of cryptocurrency adoption among the general public.
For President Donald Trump, who made crypto reform a top priority during his second term, this represents a second significant policy victory following the law he signed last year supporting dollar-pegged stablecoins.
"Donald Trump, who courted donations from the crypto industry during the election campaign, reported in June income of more than $1.4 billion from family crypto ventures over the past year."
On the other hand, Democrats argue that these profits create a sharp conflict of interest and are demanding stricter restrictions on the crypto ventures of government employees and elected officials.
Beyond the political arena, the law represents a fierce economic battlefield between financial entities. The crypto industry invested over $119 million in supporting candidates who back the sector in the 2024 elections, in anticipation of advancing the "Transparency Act" and stablecoin legislation.
Conversely, the passage of the law faces fierce opposition from banks, which fought to limit language in the bill that would allow crypto companies to effectively compete with them for bank deposits by offering rewards to customers holding stablecoins.
