A Russian drone breach in Moldova's airspace temporarily delayed the departure of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was travelling to Norway. The incident occurred as Western nations step up efforts to counter rising airspace violations.
Airspace Violation and Security Incident
A Russian drone entered Moldovan airspace on Wednesday, forcing authorities to briefly close the airspace over Chisinau airport. The aircraft carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Norway was grounded until the drone crashed roughly 160 kilometers away and the airspace was reopened.
We do not believe such drones simply enter its territory for intelligence purposes while the plane of the Ukrainian president is on the ground at the airport, said Moldova's ambassador to the US, Vladislav Kulminski.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store first revealed the incident, noting that his own plane was nearly affected by the drone activity while preparing to depart from Moldova.
Zelensky's Diplomatic Tour and Budget Requests
Following the delay, Zelensky proceeded to Norway to attend the funeral of King Harald V, joining international leaders in Oslo before traveling onward to Canada.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Ukrainian president has requested 27 billion dollars from Western allies to bridge a funding gap in Ukraine's defense budget. The request has prompted discussions among the European Union, Canada, Japan, and the UK regarding financial support mechanisms.
Rising Drone Incursions Across NATO Borders
The incident highlights a broader trend of escalating Russian drone incursions into neighboring European territories. According to recent tracking data, 16 NATO member states have reported airspace violations or drone debris over the past two years.
In response, Western allies are enhancing border security along NATO's eastern flank by deploying advanced sensors, electronic warfare systems, and interceptor drones to counter unauthorized crossings.
