Historic Milestone: Modi Maor Appointed Dallas Mavericks Assistant Coach
Israeli coach Modi Maor has been officially appointed as an assistant coach and strategist for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA under head coach Dusty May.
Historic day and immense pride for Israeli sport: Modi Maor was officially appointed today (Friday) as an assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. The global powerhouse club announced its full coaching staff for the 2026/27 season, with the Israeli coach serving as a strategist and consultant on the professional staff under head coach Dusty May.
Maor's journey, 40, to the best league in the world includes an impressive overseas path. After serving during the past decade as coach of Hapoel Jerusalem and assistant coach at Hapoel Holon, Maor embarked on an international coaching career in 2019.
He began as an assistant to Dan Shamir at the New Zealand Breakers, and was later appointed head coach of the club. Over the past two years, he coached the Japanese club Nagasaki Velca, leading them to a phenomenal season and a historic, first-ever championship in the club's history, while breaking regular-season club records.
As recalled, back in May, Maor agreed to join the coaching staff of the University of Michigan at the direct request of head coach Dusty May. After May secured the prestigious job with the Dallas Mavericks, he decided to bring Maor with him to the NBA. The appointment is now official, and joining Maor on the Mavericks' coaching staff is former player Quincy Acy.
