After nearly five years of devastating conflict, Russia and Ukraine have found a rare point of agreement: the need to appease US First Lady Melania Trump. According to a report in The New York Times, Trump, who typically avoids public exposure and foreign policy matters, recently orchestrated a six-day localized ceasefire. This temporary truce enabled the evacuation of hundreds of civilians from the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, which was facing a severe starvation crisis.

During an unusual White House event featuring representatives from both warring nations, Trump revealed her hands-on involvement in the humanitarian mission. She stated that she had monitored the crisis since September, personally reviewing demining plans, transit routes, and medical resources. She appointed her adviser Mark Beckman, a Hollywood film producer with no prior diplomatic experience, to mediate between the parties. Both Moscow and Kyiv were quick to lavish praise on the First Lady, recognizing that granting her a humanitarian victory could help them navigate relations with the unpredictable US administration.

At the Washington gathering, Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev and David Arakhamia, head of the ruling faction in the Ukrainian parliament, sat side by side. Dmitriev presented Trump with a drawing by an 11-year-old boy from Oleshky bearing the message "I love Melania." Meanwhile, Ukrainian human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets, acting on behalf of President Volodymyr Zelensky, awarded her the Order of Princess Olga, First Class, Ukraine's highest decoration for women. Lubinets noted that despite efforts by Pope Leo XIV, the initiative only materialized after Melania Trump stepped in.

Under the US-guaranteed agreement signed on October 27, Lubinets traveled to the occupied territory alongside his Russian counterpart Yana Lantratova to oversee the ceasefire. These diplomatic gestures precede formal peace talks set to resume next week in the United Arab Emirates for the first time since February. Nevertheless, the situation on the ground remains grim, as Russia continues its targeted strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure while stepping up military operations.
