McDonald's is ending its FIFA World Cup sponsorship after 32 years as part of a major restructuring of its global marketing model. The decision follows the brand's largest-ever World Cup campaign last summer, which spanned 110 countries but ultimately failed to meet internal performance benchmarks.

While the termination was not announced in a formal press release, Chief Financial Officer Ian Borden told investors during an earnings call that although the campaign generated great excitement, it performed below expectations. Marketing experts noted that the high-cost initiative by agency Wieden+Kennedy New York proved too expensive relative to its tangible impact on fans inside stadiums.

Financial reports highlighted a broader deceleration in the company's domestic market, where second-quarter same-store sales grew by just 0.8 percent compared to 2.5 percent a year earlier. Top-tier FIFA sponsors typically pay between 65 million and 95 million dollars per tournament, alongside tens of millions in promotional spending.

Despite stepping away from FIFA, company representatives emphasized that McDonald's will continue investing in sports through localized, targeted channels aligned with its new strategic vision.
