Marco Rubio's Quiet Influence on US Diplomacy with Iran

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is playing a significant behind-the-scenes role in efforts to reach an agreement with Iran, even as Special Envoy Steve Witkoff leads the direct negotiations with Tehran, according to a report by NBC News.

During a meeting in Pakistan, members of the US delegation grew concerned that Iran was altering its terms regarding a potential deal. Pausing the talks, they contacted Rubio for guidance, leading the Secretary of State to reject the Iranian proposal and halt the negotiations.

"The US cannot accept the Iranian offer," was the clear message, effectively pausing the diplomatic track at that moment.

Behind the Scenes and Future Political Ambitions

While Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner remain the public faces of diplomatic efforts, Rubio's involvement in decision-making remains vital. Concurrently, questions regarding Rubio's political future after the Trump administration are beginning to emerge, with discussions ranging from a potential 2028 presidential bid to a possible move into the private sector.
