Demonstration in front of Chabad House in southern Sri Lanka: "Israelis faced threats, firecrackers were thrown"

The Chabad House in Hiriketiya, southern Sri Lanka, which opened recently to support Israeli tourists in the area, has been dealing with a series of harassments and serious threats from some local residents in recent days. On Friday, a demonstration took place against the Chabad House, led by Buddhist monks. The protesters called on authorities to verify the legality of the center's operations and to close it if it is found to be operating without the required permits.

The Chabad House operates a kosher restaurant, hosts Shabbat meals, and serves as a safe haven for Israeli travelers. Despite this, local elements claim that unwanted religious and commercial activity is taking place and have begun to act against it. Last night, during a Shabbat dinner, a noisy demonstration occurred near the facility. Chabad representatives reported that music was played at high volume, firecrackers were thrown into the courtyard, and stones were thrown at the building during the night.

The harassment continued as Israelis on their way to the Shabbat meal were stopped by protesters, told not to approach the house, and ordered to turn back. Firecrackers were set off near guests to intimidate them. On Saturday night, the situation escalated further when several Israelis leaving the Chabad House were threatened with sticks. The situation only calmed down temporarily after local police increased their presence and supervision.

Chabad officials warn that this poses a real threat to their emissaries, their families, and visiting tourists. "The Chabad House was opened to provide a response to Israeli tourists in Hiriketiya, allowing them to eat kosher food and providing a warm, safe place away from home," they stated. "We need urgent help to continue operating safely." They are calling on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Israeli Embassy, and Sri Lankan authorities to intervene, provide permanent security, increase police presence, and investigate the violence.

Simultaneously, Sri Lankan media outlets have published sharp criticism regarding the conduct of some Israeli tourists, claiming that their aggressive behavior and sense of entitlement to local beaches deter other tourists. Allegations were also made that Israeli-run businesses operate without licenses, employ staff without appropriate visas, build structures in violation of coastal regulations, and restrict local access. Reports also claimed that "many of these soldiers are mentally traumatized after participating in military actions as part of the IDF." A group of Buddhist monks and residents has called on authorities to investigate the legality of the Chabad House and take appropriate measures, including potential evacuation, if violations are confirmed.
