Make-A-Wish Israel Holds First Charity Poker Tournament for Children
Make-A-Wish Israel recently held its first-ever charity poker tournament, titled 'ROYAL WISH,' in cooperation with the LADIES school to support children battling life-threatening illnesses.

For a child battling a life-threatening illness, a wish is far more than a passing dream. It represents a vital pause from relentless medical treatments, hospitalizations, and examinations, offering a chance to simply feel like a child again. Since its establishment in 1996, the Make-A-Wish Israel association has fulfilled approximately 6,300 wishes, transforming the lives of young patients and their families.
In a historic first for the organization, a unique fundraising event titled "ROYAL WISH" was recently held in cooperation with the LADIES Poker and Chess School. While a Royal Flush remains the ultimate hand in poker, the tournament redefined the concept of a winning hand. Around 150 participants gathered at the poker tables to support children awaiting moments of joy, hope, and strength.
Fulfilling a wish goes beyond a single day of entertainment; it often creates an invaluable family memory and a powerful psychological anchor during dark times. Behind every fulfilled wish lies a unique personal story, a family navigating complex realities, and a dream waiting to become reality. Whether meeting an idol, feeling like a superhero, or embarking on an unforgettable family journey, these experiences alter a child's perspective.
A groundbreaking 2015 Israeli study led by Prof. Anat Shoshani and initiated by Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar examined the scientific impact of wish fulfillment. Published in the international journal Quality of Life Research, the study demonstrated that children who experienced wish fulfillment exhibited a significant decrease in distress, anxiety, and depression. Furthermore, they showed improved sleep and appetite, greater cooperation with medical procedures, and a heightened sense of hope and well-being.
Beyond statistics, the research highlights a profound psychological shift: children transition from a mindset of a helpless patient to the realization that positive events can happen to them as well. Niv Sofer, co-owner of the LADIES Poker and Chess School alongside Rafi Tsvi, noted that the charity event served as an emotional milestone proving the immense power of community and giving.
