Former basketball player Kai Spears won a defamation lawsuit after being mistakenly linked to a deadly shooting. A jury awarded him $9.25 million in damages.
Kai Spears, a former college basketball player from the University of Alabama, won a defamation lawsuit against The New York Times after a jury ruled in his favor and ordered the newspaper to pay him $9.25 million in damages.
The affair began in March 2023, when The New York Times published a report claiming that Spears was linked to a deadly shooting in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in which 23-year-old Jamea Harris was killed. The report claimed that Spears was in a vehicle involved in the incident, but it later turned out that the information was incorrect and the newspaper published a correction.
It later emerged that the person in the vehicle was an Alabama team manager, not Spears. That manager was not charged and was not linked to the shooting. Spears, who played for the Alabama basketball team at the time, claimed that the publication caused him emotional distress and damaged his reputation by linking him to a murder in which he was not involved.
Spears filed the lawsuit in May 2023, and after a nine-day trial in federal court in northern Alabama, the jury accepted his claims and ruled in his favor. His attorney welcomed the decision, stating he believes the ruling will improve the standards of journalism in the United States.
On the other hand, The New York Times stated that it is disappointed with the ruling, claimed that it was a mistake made in good faith, and clarified that it is examining the legal options available to it.
This is an unusual loss for the newspaper, which, according to reports, has not lost a defamation lawsuit in the United States following an article it published for more than 50 years.
