Viral Disinformation Promising Free Apartments Sparks Chaos at LA Hotel
Hundreds of residents swarmed a Los Angeles hotel following viral social media disinformation promising free apartments, leading to widespread chaos and disappointment.

A massive chaos erupted over the weekend in downtown Los Angeles after hundreds of residents swarmed the Mayfair Hotel following viral social media posts promising free apartments. The crowds, many facing severe housing distress, rushed to the location lured by disinformation before realizing they had fallen victim to a cruel hoax.
The Mayfair Hotel, acquired by the city of Los Angeles in August 2023 under Mayor Karen Bass's housing initiative for the homeless, serves as part of the municipal temporary housing infrastructure. According to local media reports, the drama unfolded after social media accounts shared a flyer allegedly from the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), highlighting that participants could view available apartments and get approved on the spot.
The rumor spread rapidly, drawing hundreds of people hoping to secure shelter. However, the viral posts omitted a critical detail: the event was not open to the general public. It was exclusively intended for about 300 pre-registered individuals accompanied by their social workers.
As massive crowds formed long lines outside the hotel, reporters and local authorities clarified that no open distribution of housing was taking place, leaving many disappointed applicants facing the harsh reality.
