London Police Sued in High Court Over Arrest of Pro-Jewish Activist
London's Metropolitan Police faces a High Court lawsuit led by Our Fight UK founder Mark Birbeck over his wrongful arrest for holding a pro-Jewish solidarity sign.
London's Metropolitan Police is facing a wave of legal and public criticism following a new lawsuit filed in the High Court in London. The legal action is led by Mark Birbeck, founder of the organization Our Fight UK, with full support and funding from the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA).
The incident that triggered the lawsuit occurred just five days after a terror attack at a synagogue in Heaton Park. According to extensive footage from the scene, Birbeck was standing calmly while holding a sign that read "We stand with Britain's Jews" and engaging in a quiet debate with pro-Palestinian supporters before being arrested.
Legal Challenge Against Police Conduct
Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, Birbeck was arrested under suspicion of a terrorism offense, a public order offense, and breach of the peace. He is now demanding that the court officially rule that the police conduct in his case was entirely unlawful.
"It is an outrageous and baseless arrest," Birbeck stated following the filing of the lawsuit. "I wanted to publicly display a simple message of solidarity with British Jews just a week after members of the community were murdered outside a Manchester synagogue. I was arrested, and the accusations leveled against me that day are outrageous and baseless. I thank the CAA for taking on my case and ensuring the police are held accountable."
Criticism Over Two-Tier Policing
Speaking on behalf of the CAA, Stephen Silverman, Director of Investigations and Enforcement, harshly criticized law enforcement: "The treatment of Mr. Birbeck is another outrageous example of 'two-tier policing' in Britain. While pro-Palestinian activists break the law time and again without interference, a law-abiding citizen cannot express support for Britain's Jews peacefully without being arrested under suspicion of terrorism.
The Campaign Against Antisemitism continues to provide free legal representation and litigation funding to victims of antisemitism or those targeted for supporting the Jewish community.
