Despite the President's statements that the American military destroyed the targets of the Iranian crown jewel, it should be emphasized that no operational activity was carried out on the island, and that the military action tonight was limited, as far as is known, to a pinpoint neutralization on Larak Island.
The economic lifeline of the Islamic Republic
Donald Trump's choice to focus attention specifically on Kharg Island is not accidental. The island, located in the northern Persian Gulf, constitutes the most sensitive and vital economic infrastructure for the regime in Tehran.
About 90% of all of Iran's crude oil exports drain and pass through the loading terminals at Kharg. Almost daily, millions of barrels are pumped there from the country's central oil fields directly to international tankers. A classified document from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from 1984 defined the facilities at Kharg as the most vital in the Iranian oil system, emphasizing that their continuous operation is necessary for the country's economic existence. According to data from the company TankerTrackers, the terminals on the island operate continuously even during periods of high security tension. The total storage capacity on the island is estimated at about 30 million barrels of oil, while according to reports from the Reuters agency, about 18 million barrels are currently stored there. Military experts have previously noted that intentional damage or an attempt to take over the oil facilities on Kharg Island would require a significant volume of ground forces — a scenario that the American administration has avoided until now.
Operational activity in Larak — and the Iranian response
In contrast to the psychological warfare surrounding Kharg, the operational activity of the US military took place entirely on Larak Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz. According to a statement by the US Central Command (CENTCOM), Air Force forces attacked two rocket launchers of the Revolutionary Guards that were intended to lay naval mines towards international shipping lanes.
In the US, they emphasized that this was a pinpoint neutralization intended to remove an immediate threat and maintain freedom of maritime trade, a few days after the completion of an American operation to clear mines in the area.
Shortly after the attack on Larak, Iran launched a retaliatory attack. The Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for launching missile barrages at US Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz as well as at American bases in the region.
