The Loewenstein Rehabilitation Medical Center in Ra'anana is set to quintuple in size under a sweeping expansion plan that will double its inpatient bed capacity to 600. The proposal goes before the Central District Planning and Building Committee on Monday for final deposit approval.

Established in 1959, the hospital currently spans some 40,000 square meters on a 51-dunam plot. The new blueprint will authorize an additional 155,000 square meters of construction, bringing the total complex area to 195,000 square meters. The project includes four new buildings alongside the three existing structures, with the tallest soaring 12 stories.

The expansion will feature a dedicated new inpatient tower to double bed capacity, as well as a multi-purpose complex housing a public hotel, convention center, offices, commercial spaces, and restaurants. Additional facilities will accommodate a geriatric-nursing wing, staff housing, and a vocational training center. Underground construction spanning 70,000 square meters will largely address the hospital's parking shortages.

The development comes against the backdrop of a systemic shortage in healthcare resources. A State Comptroller report published in June 2026 highlighted chronic staffing deficits across public health professions even before the war, noting that rehabilitation staffing quotas failed to meet national demands.

Since the outbreak of the war in October 2023 through July 2025, Loewenstein has treated approximately 11% of all hospitalized combat wounded. Furthermore, about 75% of war casualties receiving day rehabilitation at the facility arrived from other hospitals, while 25% transitioned from Loewenstein's own inpatient wards. As Israel's premier rehabilitation hub, the center specializes in treating complex trauma, brain and spinal injuries, amputees, and stroke patients, playing a critical role in long-term functional recovery.
