Haim Tomer, a former senior Mossad official, spoke today on 103fm radio about recent claims regarding the expansion of the Iranian threat, arguing that there is intentional deception by various senior officials who are interested in distracting public opinion from the truth.
"Iran is not a trivial subject; it is a real one. The two campaigns that were conducted ended without reaching their declared goals. Iran still has 700 kg of uranium enriched to 60%, with the capability to manage a project of rapid enrichment to 90%. The Strait of Hormuz traffic was not finally regulated by an agreement," said Tomer.
He explained that he is not personally convinced by the recent threats coming from Iran, clarifying that the fear is manufactured by internal parties with specific interests: "They are creating statements, spins, and intentional misinformation by people who are masters of misleading Israeli public opinion. It is not easy to understand what is happening. Most of their threats do not materialize. Iran is standing on its feet, the Revolutionary Guards are in control, and they retain a residual missile capability of 50–60% of what they once had—roughly 2,000 missiles."
Furthermore, he identified the core Israeli error since the start of the war in 2023: "Our failure in all campaigns lies in managing the strategic campaign. There is a momentum to these things, and there is a stage where you must realize objectives through security arrangements. There were stages where this was possible, as the Iranian leadership was hit hard."
Tomer sharply criticized the current Israeli approach: "They are misleading the public into believing that force can solve everything, down to the last terrorist and the last Iranian—this is total nonsense. It will not happen. It did not happen with Hamas, and it will not happen with anyone else. There is a stage after the use of force. Israel has an opportunity to reach a security agreement that would close a front and release the IDF from these insane loads, but it is not happening."
In conclusion, he warned against continuing the current pattern: "If Israel continues to be a nation that relies only on its sword, it will fail. The Chief of Staff has said that the IDF is close to collapse. This load on a small country like ours, with a limited recruitment resource because the ultra-Orthodox are not being recruited, is something Israel cannot withstand over the years. We need to look for a different strategy."
