The United States has deployed a significant military force near Iran: the aircraft carrier USS George Washington has arrived in the Arabian Sea, near the Strait of Hormuz, replacing the USS Abraham Lincoln. An aircraft carrier functions as an autonomous floating airbase, enabling fighter jet operations far from US territory. With approximately 5,000 crew members and various advanced aircraft on board, the US Navy states it is prepared for prolonged activity in the region.
USS George Washington operates as part of a strike group, including escort vessels that provide protection. This allows the United States to maintain operational capability, track threats, and defend itself without relying on nearby land bases.
Strategic Importance of the Deployment
Operating in the Arabian Sea near the Strait of Hormuz—a vital maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the open sea—gives Washington the ability to respond rapidly to developments across the Middle East.
The carrier's deck hosts some of the most advanced US aircraft, including F-35C stealth fighters designed for low-observable operations and F/A-18 multirole jets. The group also includes electronic warfare aircraft, airborne early warning systems, and helicopters for rescue and anti-submarine missions. Flight operations continue around the clock.
Captain Nicholas DeLeo, the aircraft carrier's commander, noted the high morale among the crew. "The dedication and teamwork I see across the ship are exceptional. This spirit keeps us ready and resilient," he stated.
Rear Admiral Jeff Heames, commander of the naval strike group, emphasized that the crews are prepared for long-term operations. "The crews aboard the USS George Washington and the Fifth Strike Group are ready, determined, and equipped for prolonged activity. Our sailors understand the importance of the mission and continue to carry it out with precision," he added.
Scale and Logistics
Flight operations are intense, with landings occurring approximately once per minute, totaling about 70 per day. This week, the ship marked a milestone: the 200,000th landing of an F-35C jet in the carrier's history.
To support the 5,000 crew members, a massive supply system is required. Approximately 15,000 meals are prepared daily. Food, ammunition, and aviation fuel are transferred via supply ships and helicopters. The carrier itself is nuclear-powered, eliminating the need for regular refueling.
Retired General Joseph Votel, former commander of US Central Command, explained that the deployment aims to maintain a significant and available American military presence in the Middle East. He noted that the US must be prepared for a long-term situation and ensure that stationed forces remain at a high state of readiness.
The arrival of the USS George Washington is not an announcement of a new military operation, but it allows the US to keep substantial air and naval power near the scene of tension, ensuring readiness for any potential action.
