The USA banned imports from 43 Chinese companies yesterday due to allegations of human rights violations against Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities. One of the companies is Hunan Aihua, one of the largest manufacturers of electrical capacitors in China, according to a government publication.

The companies were added to the entity list under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which restricts the import of products linked to human rights violations and the ongoing ethnic cleansing in the Xinjiang province. The latest additions include companies from the pharmaceutical, metal, cotton, food, and lithium extraction sectors. This is the first time companies have been added to the list under the Donald Trump administration, and it now includes 187 companies, compared to 144 previously. This is also the largest addition of companies to the list since the law became official in December 2021.

The companies on the list use raw materials originating from the Xinjiang province or work together with the local government to recruit and deport Uyghurs and other persecuted minorities from the region.

"The action by the Donald Trump administration today strengthens the US economy against products made using forced labor, and sends a message to the Chinese Communist Party that we will not turn our eyes away from their genocide and human rights violations," said Congressman John Moolenaar, Chairman of the Congressional Committee on China.

The USA claims that Chinese authorities have established detention camps for Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minorities in the Xinjiang province in western China. Beijing rejected the claims.

"The accusation that forced labor exists is a lie. Chinese law explicitly prohibits forced labor. Workers from all ethnic groups in Xinjiang enjoy, in accordance with the law, the right to choose their occupation of their own free will, receive equal treatment in employment, and receive compensation for their work," a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington stated yesterday.

Hunan Aihua, which supplies products to the electronics, transportation, industrial, and energy sectors, was added to the list because the USA believes its raw materials originate from Xinjiang. Qiaqia Foods, whose products are exported to about 50 countries, was also added to the list.
