Dolly Parton's team has confirmed that the country music icon has died following a short battle with cancer. Parton, one of the most beloved and successful American singers of all time, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, at the age of 80.
"Our beloved Dolly Parton dedicated her life and career to bringing joy, laughter, hope, and integrity to everything she touched. Her extraordinary generosity reached the lives of countless people she would never meet, but she was always there to lend a hand," stated the message from Team Dolly.
The team further highlighted her philanthropic legacy: "Whether it was the hundreds of millions of books donated through the Imagination Library project, or the funding of research that helped create a life-saving vaccine used around the world — Dolly's unconditional love for all people was the force that drove her lasting impact." The team added that Parton passed away in a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by her loved ones.
Parton's death followed several months during which she spoke publicly about her health, though her comments remained vague. In an update posted last week, she mentioned dealing with health issues that "I simply didn't notice while I was taking care of Carl," her husband Carl Dean, who died last year after 58 years of marriage. "Seriously, even though I am still recovering, I am still working," she wrote at the time.
In March, she made her first public appearance in months to deliver a keynote speech at Dollywood, the park named in her honor. "I just got burned out and tired, from grieving for Carl and from many other little things that happen," she said. "I brought myself to a place where I needed to rebuild myself spiritually, emotionally, and physically. But everything is good. It didn't slow me down."
