Israel Hayom's Bestsellers: Amos Harel continues to surprise
"Celebrating Life" by the late Rabbi Jonathan Sacks maintains its strength in second place. Yonatan Adiri's surprising hit proves that podcast advertising is effective in Israel, while "Nathan and Amos" by Assaf Inbari marks its 19th week on the chart. "First Crush" shows that the young teenage audience is definitely engaging with books that speak to their hearts.
Over the past two years, we have been tracking the flood of lawsuits filed by publishers and authors against AI companies that used their books to train their models. This week, a significant ruling was reached against Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI model.
It was determined that while the use of books for training purposes might constitute fair use, the method of pirated downloading used to obtain copies of these works is illegitimate. Consequently, the company was ordered to pay $3,000 for each work—funds to be distributed among authors, publishers, and other rights holders—totaling $1.5 billion, from which legal fees and expenses will be deducted.
What does this mean in practice? While this is not a Supreme Court ruling, and the gap between this decision and future legislation remains wide, it presents a real threat to AI companies. It serves as a clear warning: if they wish to train models using copyrighted books, it is far better to pay for the rights in advance.
