Technion competes with Stanford: Two Israeli universities in the global AI top tier
Two Israeli universities have been ranked among the top 30 in the inaugural W5 index for "AI output" in academia. The Technion is ranked 25th, and Tel Aviv University is 28th.
Two Israeli universities were ranked among the top 30 in the W5 index for "AI output" in academia, which is being published for the first time. The Technion is ranked 25th and Tel Aviv University is ranked 28th.
The report notes that "both institutions maintain close ties with the Israeli research and development center of Nvidia in Yokneam - the largest engineering site of the chip company outside the United States - with the Israeli operations of Intel in Kiryat Gat and Haifa, and with the human resource pool of graduates of the IDF's Unit 8200." The report also finds that the output of AI company founders per graduate at the Technion competes with that of Stanford.
The AI production capacity index was conducted by the research unit of the American PR firm W5. It ranked 50 of the world's leading universities based on their influence on the industry (number of graduates and faculty members working in leading companies in the field), graduate entrepreneurship (graduates who founded startups, number of unicorns, and volume of capital raised), volume and quality of research in the field of artificial intelligence, computing infrastructure and its quality, depth of the AI curriculum, and mentions in generative artificial intelligence systems.
The index ranks Israel eighth in the world in the number of graduates who founded AI companies. The 50 universities that made the ranking included 25 from the United States, 4 from the United Kingdom, 3 from China, and, as mentioned, 2 from Israel. Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Carnegie Mellon University lead the index.
Alongside the general ranking, the Technion precedes many elite universities, including Harvard, in two key sub-indices: the number of faculty members and graduates in AI industries and entrepreneurship among graduates. The Weizmann Institute did not enter the ranking this year due to the fact that it does not have undergraduate studies, which makes it difficult to compare it to other institutions, but it is a candidate to join next year.
