Owner returns to his home in Qusra and raises US flag: "The priority is to be with my family"
After a week of watching the siege of his home from Ohio, Luay Abu Ridi has returned to Qusra and raised the American flag. He reported that family property was stolen and is in contact with the US Embassy to resolve the situation.
Luay Abu Ridi, a US citizen of Palestinian descent living in Ohio, returned this week to his home in the Ras al-Ain area of the village of Qusra, south of Nablus, which had been under siege by settlers for several days. Upon his arrival, Abu Ridi raised the US flag over the building, a move that sparked widespread reaction on social media.
Previously, while still in the US, Abu Ridi stated:
"I have appealed to Congress. Evacuating the tent is not a solution. My plans may change at any moment. My top priority is to get home safely and be with my family."
He confirmed that he is in contact with the US Embassy regarding his return. Abu Ridi had been monitoring the situation via security cameras around his home and decided to return personally, as he could no longer watch the pressure being exerted on his family from afar.
After arriving, Abu Ridi reported that settlers had surrounded the building and that his family's property had been stolen. He continues to coordinate with American officials to secure the lifting of the siege on his home and the homes of his other family members.
Raising the American flag has become a symbolic message directed at the US administration. Activists and bloggers argue that Washington is now facing a test: whether it will act to protect an American citizen or if the gesture will remain merely symbolic. Palestinian activist Yassin Izz ad-Din noted that this move is an attempt to remind President Donald Trump and his administration of their responsibility to protect their citizens.
The situation remains tense, and the presence of the American flag could potentially provoke further confrontations between settlers and Palestinians in the area.
