Port of Ashdod Becomes Navy 'Forward Position' Amid War, Drawing International Interest
The Port of Ashdod maintained Israel's economic supply chain under fire while serving as a forward position for the Navy. The port's emergency management model has since been presented to European counterparts, with plans for further infrastructure expansion underway.
The Port of Ashdod continued to operate with functional continuity during the days of fighting, combining operational work under sirens with providing a response to the Israeli Navy. The port's piers served as forward positions for security forces, in parallel with the efforts of the Ministry of Transport and the company's employees to maintain the economic supply chain.
The port's operational model during emergencies was shared with European partners after the port's chairman, Shaul Schneider, presented the crisis management methods to the management of the Port of Hamburg in Germany. The experience gained in Ashdod has since aroused interest from entities managing ports in areas with security challenges, including the Persian Gulf.
Alongside emergency operations, a development plan is being promoted at the port that includes transferring cargo to Israel Railways tracks, deepening piers to accommodate large cargo ships, and implementing corporate and environmental responsibility (ESG) standards.
The Director General of the Ministry of Transport, Moshe Ben-Zaken, addressed the port's preparedness:
"The port is prepared for any scenario. The Port of Ashdod is a strategic asset. The more we invest in its infrastructure, equipment, and capabilities, the more we will challenge private competitors to continue to improve and become more efficient. Our interest is that all of Israel's ports possess the most advanced infrastructure and equipment. As the government port, the strengthening and development of the Port of Ashdod are a national interest, as part of strengthening the competition and resilience of the Israeli economy. I want to thank the management of the Port of Ashdod and all the company's employees for their dedicated work and for maintaining functional continuity."
The Chairman of the Israel Ports Company, Hezi Haluvi, noted that it is essential to promote the deepening of the piers at the Port of Ashdod as part of a comprehensive national plan for port infrastructure development, which will address future economic needs and strengthen Israel's ability to receive large vessels while maintaining a continuous and efficient supply chain.
