The greatest treasure in history: The ancient ship that revealed the emperor's hoard

Shipwreck fragments discovered more than a decade ago off the southern coast of Croatia, near a remote island, date back to the seventh or eighth century AD. After years of careful analysis of the findings from the site, archaeologists have managed to decipher the ship's story and determine unequivocally that it was carrying a high-ranking official and their entourage when it sank to the depths, as reported by Reuters.

Among the remains of the vessel, an unprecedented haul was discovered, including gold coins, buckles decorated with rubies, emeralds, and pearls, and a gold signet ring bearing the image of the emperor, according to Pavel Dugonjić of the Croatian Conservation Institute. Igor Miholjek of the institute emphasized the magnitude of the achievement, noting that it involves an impressive amount of gold—the total weight of which exceeds half a kilogram—constituting the largest gold hoard ever found on a shipwreck throughout the Mediterranean.

The “Tatinica – Byzantine Shipwreck” project is centred on the remains of a vessel dating from the late seventh or early eighth century.

Beyond the immense value of the findings, researchers note that the discovery provides a critical glimpse into the turbulent transition period between the end of the late Roman Empire and the formation of the medieval world. According to Justin Leidwanger of Stanford University, the site is a vital source for understanding how sea routes kept the Mediterranean connected, how these networks fragmented, and ultimately how the entire empire collapsed.
