“The Phenomenon is Escalating and Could End in a Strategic Disaster”: IDF Warns of Border Crossings into Syria

While IDF forces prepare day and night to defend the Israel-Syria border, fighters in the sector are dealing with a phenomenon that diverts them from their primary mission: young Israelis, identified with what is known as the “Bashan Pioneers,” repeatedly cross the border into Syria in an attempt to establish a foothold beyond the fence.

Among the soldiers, they have earned the nickname “Bashan Violators.” Security officials in the sector emphasize that in their eyes, there is no pioneering here, but rather a phenomenon that endangers lives and directly harms the security of the residents of the North.

According to the officials, the forces operating in the sector are trained to defend against threats coming from the east, not against Israelis leaving the country's territory into Syria. “We are built to look forward. All the infrastructure, forces, observations, and positions are aimed at the threat from the red side. The event where people go out from the blue side is something we are not prepared for. It simply diverts us from the mission,” they note.

The result is a direct hit to the defense system. Every time this happens, forces, drones, observations, and command posts are scrambled, and fighters who are supposed to conduct patrols and defense in the buffer zone run on the rocks of the Golan Heights to chase young Israelis.

According to the official, this is a phenomenon that repeats itself at least once a week, and sometimes even on consecutive days. “It does not look random,” officials say, noting a feeling that it is organized.

The young people, who come from the Hilltop Youth background, operate in a fixed pattern. Sometimes it involves three or four young people, and sometimes mass events of dozens of participants. Officials report cases involving about 90 people. They choose different points along the fence and cause damage that requires repair.

Some manage to penetrate tens and even about a hundred meters into Syrian territory. IDF forces have found them with shovels, equipment, and wooden poles, indicating attempts to prepare small infrastructure.

The IDF is mainly concerned about the day when an incident will end in a disaster. It is important to remember that on the Syrian side, almost everyone has a weapon. If someone decides to shoot or kidnap these young people, we could reach a strategic event that no one knows how it will end.

According to the official, the young people themselves do not accept the forces with understanding. “They say that the IDF is bothering them, that they should leave them alone and that the army should mind its own business. They resist detention and sometimes it also leads to physical confrontations,” the officials explain.

The official does not hide the frustration of the fighters, especially the reservists. “You have to understand who these people are that they are chasing. A reserve soldier who left home to protect the residents of the North finds himself chasing Israelis who cross the border. He explains that he came to protect the country, and instead he spends hours chasing the ‘Bashan Violators.’ This is an abnormal reality.”

Without a change in the enforcement policy, the phenomenon will not disappear. As long as there is no real price for these actions, they will continue. From the perspective of the fighters in the sector, the message is clear: “Every time they cross the border, they not only endanger themselves – they weaken the defense of the residents of the North and force the IDF to divert valuable resources from the defense mission to the mission of chasing Israeli citizens.”
