This is the fifth detention extension for the two since they were first arrested in late July.
During the hearing, the police presented a list of 18 investigative actions yet to be carried out, claiming there is a real risk of obstruction of justice if the suspects are released at this stage. A representative of the investigative unit confirmed that the investigation is progressing, but police are still awaiting forensic results from the Institute of Forensic Medicine, a process that could take about two more weeks.
One of the central details that emerged during the hearing concerns the circumstances of the discovery of Dayan's body. It was revealed that police forces conducted at least four previous searches in the area where the body was eventually found, without locating anything. The police refused to disclose the exact location or the information that led to the discovery at a later stage. Additionally, it was revealed that suspect Barberman performed a "lead and point" reconstruction, but the spot he indicated as the place where he parted from Dayan does not match the location where the body was found.
Defense counsel pointed to weaknesses in the evidentiary infrastructure, noting that no DNA from any of those involved was found on a shovel discovered near the scene. It also emerged that the police possess security camera footage from a gas station, in which the suspects are seen with Dayan shortly before his disappearance.
Despite the footage, the suspects have provided several conflicting versions that do not align with the evidence in the file. Judge Itamar Sivan determined that despite certain deficiencies in the evidence and the absence of direct forensic proof at this stage, there remains a reasonable suspicion linking both men to the offenses. The judge emphasized the grounds of dangerousness and the fear of obstruction, but did not grant the police's request in full, extending the detention by only one week.
