The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Trust made a significant investment of approximately $180 million, acquiring 1.19 million shares of FedEx Freight (FDXF). This purchase took place in the second quarter of 2026, just weeks after the company was spun off from its parent company, FedEx, and began trading as an independent public entity. This investment adds to the foundation's existing holding in FedEx shares worth approximately $746.6 million, signaling strong confidence in the future of the freight industry.

What is behind the new freight giant?

FedEx Freight does not deal with small package delivery, but is the largest freight carrier in North America. The company specializes in transporting heavy cargo and industrial goods using the "Less-Than-Truckload" (LTL) method. With a vast network including about 30,000 vehicles, 17,000 tractors, and over 365 branches across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the company is a central transport artery for manufacturers and distributors.

Gates' timing is not coincidental. Market expert Jim Cramer explained that company spin-offs often create technical, rather than economic, selling pressure, as existing shareholders sell the new shares they received regardless of the company's performance. This pressure leads to a temporary price drop. Cramer emphasized that FedEx Freight is the largest player in a market that recently emerged from a prolonged recession, making it an attractive long-term buying opportunity.

Wall Street's forecast and the numbers

In its latest reports, the company presented revenue of $2.4 billion, an increase of 4.8% compared to last year, alongside a decrease of about 24% in adjusted operating profit, which stood at $363 million. Despite this, investment bank Goldman Sachs gave the stock a "buy" recommendation with a target price of $186, reflecting a potential upside of about 37% from its current price. The bank projects annual revenue growth of 4% to 6% through 2029.

The improvement in the company's profitability is expected to come from independent contract pricing and expansion into growing logistics sectors such as data centers and healthcare. While the market reacted with concern after the spin-off, the Gates Foundation chose to take advantage of the temporary instability to build a long-term position in a company that holds critical infrastructure for the American economy.
