Syrian Foreign Minister: Country expects to resume negotiations with Israel
The Syrian Foreign Ministry has signaled an intention to return to the negotiating table with Israel to reach a security agreement following a suspension caused by an airstrike. Minister Assad al-Shibani emphasized the need to seize a "historic opportunity," while noting the current lack of trust in Israel and prioritizing a halt to attacks.
Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shibani told Reuters on Sunday that his country expects to resume negotiations with Israel soon regarding a security agreement, following a suspension of contacts caused by an Israeli strike on a Syrian air force base.
According to the minister, Syria does not currently trust Israel, and its main priority is to stop Israeli attacks. However, al-Shibani emphasized that Syria is "extending its hand" to diplomacy and called on Israel to seize the "historic opportunity" that lies before the two countries.
Following the strike, al-Shibani's office strongly condemned the actions, defining them as "unjustified aggression and a blatant violation of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity." Damascus further warned that this constitutes a "dangerous escalation that threatens security and stability in the region."
