The great sports presenter retires after 35 years: "The time has come"
Sharon Davidovitch, who for years commanded the courts and sports broadcasts, announced his departure from the game last night. While he is saying goodbye to playing, he noted that the world of sports will forever remain an inseparable part of his life.
Sports commentator, journalist, television director, and prominent presenter Sharon Davidovitch, 40, announced yesterday (Saturday) that he has decided to retire from playing basketball after nearly 35 years during which the game was an inseparable part of his life.
In a post uploaded to his Facebook page, he shared the news while recalling fond memories from his long-standing career. He looked back at the beginning of his journey as a child, told of the injuries that kept him away from the courts time and again, and described the moment he realized it was time to say goodbye.
"That's it, apparently it's time to retire. This will be a retirement just for me, and for myself. It might be clumsy, sometimes a bit pathetic, but it will be mine, and only mine," wrote Davidovitch.
He emphasized that he is not retiring from the world of sports media, but only taking a break from playing. "Almost thirty-five years have flown by in a flash, and apparently the time has come," he continued.
"Basketball was my whole world. From now on, basketball will be for me purely for fun. And what fun it was," he continued, describing the years with longing. "I'm no longer good at basketball," he added in his farewell statement.
Over the years, Davidovitch established his status as a unique voice in local sports media, specializing in international sports — from European football and basketball (NBA and EuroLeague) to Olympic sports and tennis. In the media world, he also holds an exceptionally rich history as a commentator and presenter on Sport 1 channels (Charlton), alongside hosting programs, writing, and appearing in leading media outlets such as ynet, Yedioth Ahronoth, and Kan 11.
Beyond his work on screen, he is one of the shapers of written and recorded sports culture in Israel: he is a co-author of several successful sports books that entered bestseller lists, including "Legends of the Turf," "Dream Team," "World Cup Wonders," and "Olympic Story." In addition, he is a host and partner in popular podcasts such as "On Her Majesty's Service," which deals with English football.
