The Chosen Son: Meet Arsenal's New Secret in Attack

In England and Spain, it is reported that Arsenal is serious about signing Vinicius, whose move could be one of the most significant in the history of the club and the Premier League in general. However, it already seems that the arrival of another left winger could give the champion an equally significant offensive upgrade.

Christos Tzolis, a Greek attacking midfielder, arrived in London from Club Brugge for 34 million pounds — a price that caused quite a few eyebrows to raise, considering he failed to make a mark during three years at Norwich. But the 24-year-old player is not just known to all football people in his homeland since he was seven. He is not just another player whom Barcelona tried to sign at age 12, and who once scored 100 goals in a season in the PAOK youth team. From his perspective, the three seasons as someone belonging to a Premier League club were a learning experience that made him more ready, mentally and psychologically, to play for the champion of England and the runner-up of Europe.

"Tzolis joined us at age seven with qualities that set him apart from others," the PAOK academy technical director, Vasilis Mitsas, told the British "Sun". "From the first moment, it was clear that he was an exceptionally talented footballer, and everyone who worked with him believed he had the potential to play for the biggest clubs in Europe. One memory that stands out particularly comes from our time in the under-12 team: as a reward for winning an international tournament, the owner gave us the opportunity to play a friendly match against Barcelona at their training complex. We won 2:1, with him scoring a goal, providing an assist, and putting in the most prominent performance on the pitch. His display was so impressive that the Catalans expressed interest in him immediately after the match ended."

Tzolis, as mentioned, did not sign with Barca and did not let the media noise go to his head. He passed through several academies in Germany and returned to PAOK to play in the youth team until he was promoted to the senior squad. Mitsas remembers the winger as "humble and grounded" — qualities that are part of his character even today. Throughout his development in the academy, he played in all three attacking positions, but what really set him apart was his personality, which was always described as having a "strong mentality" and an "uncompromising desire to win."

When he was 19 (in 2021), he left Greece and joined Norwich for 9 million pounds. In the three years that followed, the winger failed to rise with the Canaries and spent two of them on loan at the Dutch Twente and Fortuna Dusseldorf. It was precisely in Belgium that he rebuilt his career, recording 43 goals and 45 assists in 108 matches over two seasons at Brugge. But these are just the big numbers — the analytical data tells a much more fascinating story about the type of player he became even before the age of 25.

The Greek did not need an adaptation period. In his first season in Belgium (2024/25), he participated in 38 matches, scored 16 goals, and assisted 10 more. Even then, it was clear from the advanced numbers that he was a leading opportunity creator. The 2025/26 season already marked his step up from a major contributor to the most dominant player in the league.

Tzolis finished first in Belgium in almost every possible attacking metric: assists, expected assists (xA), expected goals (xG), shots on goal, on target and from the box, chance creation (from open play, set pieces, and team moves), and touches in the opponent's box. He finished the season with involvement in 40 league goals — at least nine more than any other Brugge player since 2014 (above names like Charles De Ketelaere or Noa Lang). By the way, already in his first season at the club, he recorded involvement in 25 goals, the fourth-best figure for the team in the last decade.

After 17 goals and 23 assists in 36 matches in a record-breaking season, the winger rightfully won the Player of the Season award in Belgium, and more importantly, ensured a double (league and cup) win. In Greece, they knew it was only a matter of time until the warrior from Thessaloniki would succeed in a big way, even after the difficulties in England. And here, he was signed by the Gunners to man the left wing and step into the shoes of Leandro Trossard. With the ability to also play in the number 10 position and on the right wing, he will give Arsenal offensive depth, combativeness, and precision.

Now, it is interesting to compare the numbers against Morgan Rogers, who rejected the move to Arsenal in favor of signing with Chelsea (which agreed to pay more than 115 million pounds for him). It is clear that the Belgian league is not as high-quality and fast as the Premier League, but when looking at the "player radar" of both, it is evident that Tzolis is a better dribbler, keeps the ball better, and is a more accurate passer. And all this, for 83 million pounds less.
