Heart of a Panther: The Secret Air Battle Hidden for 50 Years

Today we will talk about a battle that was classified as top secret for 50 years.

Our story begins on November 18, 1952, during a storm that shook the American aircraft carrier Oriskany off the border triangle of North Korea, Russia, and China. It was a grueling period of the Korean War. Lieutenant Royce Williams, piloting an F9F Panther jet, was on a routine patrol when the control officer reported enemy planes approaching from the north.

Williams soon spotted seven silver MiG-15s with red stars. The battle began immediately. Despite the MiG-15's superior speed and climb rate, Williams utilized his Panther's advantages: better maneuverability, visibility, and a larger cannon ammunition supply. In a 15-minute dogfight, he downed four Soviet fighters despite sustaining heavy damage to his own aircraft.

Upon returning to the Oriskany with 263 shell holes, Williams was hailed a hero, but soon received an order: "This battle? Forget about it. Erase it. It never happened." The reason was political — the White House feared an escalation with the USSR that could lead to nuclear war. Furthermore, the intelligence regarding the MiGs had been obtained by breaking into Soviet communication networks, which required strict secrecy.

Royce Williams kept the secret for 37 years, not even telling his wife. The classification was only lifted in 2002. In 2017, he was awarded the Navy Cross, and in February 2026, at the age of 100, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest decoration the US can bestow upon its warriors.
