IDF Chief of Staff Advances Robotics and Autonomous Systems
Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir held a force-building meeting, declaring that "today's force-building is tomorrow's victory." The strategy prioritizes the integration of robotics and autonomous systems across air, land, and maritime domains.
Despite ongoing tensions across multiple fronts—including Judea and Samaria, the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and with a focus on Iran—it was revealed on Wednesday that IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir held a high-level status meeting on Monday regarding the IDF's force-building efforts.
Opening the session, the Chief of Staff stated, "Today's force-building is tomorrow's victory." He emphasized that current capabilities are the result of decisions made years ago, stressing the need to plan at least three years ahead and align budgets accordingly.
Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Tamir Yadey presented on internal and external processes. According to several generals, the presentation lacked clarity and raised questions regarding the depth of involvement in force-building. The meeting lasted approximately three and a half hours.
Since taking office, Lt. Gen. Zamir has implemented several key decisions, including upgrading the Armored and Engineering Corps, establishing new reserve brigades, massive procurement of armored vehicles, accelerating the production of tanks and Namer carriers, and integrating robotics into air and ground operations.
A central pillar of his vision is the creation of an autonomous systems branch. A significant decision was made to expand the multidimensional unit, which integrates advanced weaponry, to serve as a technological engine for the entire IDF.
It was learned that the Hat"al unit within the Technology and Logistics Directorate has been instructed to accelerate procurement and robotic developments in coordination with the Ministry of Defense. Other classified matters were also discussed during the session.
Changes in Force-Building
Division 96, commanded by Brig. Gen. Oren Simcha, is a key focus for the General Staff. It is currently building the "David" brigades and reserve combat battalions, including the acquisition of JLTV armored vehicles and advanced combat gear for day and night operations.
Ramon Brigade (261)
This reserve infantry brigade, based on Givati Brigade fighters, is expected to transfer to the Sinai Division under the Southern Command. Its establishment provides the Operations Directorate with greater flexibility after three years of intense combat.
Training Division
Division 38, commanded by Brig. Gen. Sharon Altit, was established in 2026 following the lessons of October 7. It integrates various training schools for armored, engineering, and artillery corps, as well as border defense.
Battalion 607
This new engineering battalion within the Givati Brigade is being equipped with unique tools for destroying underground infrastructure and maneuvering deep within enemy territory.
Hasmoneans Brigade
This unit is critical to current operational activity and reserve force development. The Chief of Staff expressed satisfaction with the command's performance and the conscription processes overseen by the Manpower Directorate.
Air Force
The IDF and the Ministry of Defense are continuing joint efforts to procure fighter aircraft, refueling tankers, combat helicopters, and advanced munitions.
