The National Insurance Institute is a government agency designed to help residents avoid financial distress due to factors beyond their control, such as illness, injury, or old age. In most countries, national insurance systems are based on mandatory payments deducted from an employee's income, and are sometimes mandatory for those who are not employed.

The agency reports that the deadlines for reporting and paying insurance premiums for the self-employed and employers expire in three days, on August 16. This deadline applies to reporting income or status and paying the insurance premiums required by the institution.

Who needs to pay?

The obligation varies according to status:

  1. Employees: insurance premiums are usually deducted from the salary by the employer, who transfers the payments to the National Insurance Institute.

  2. Self-employed: are required to report their income to the National Insurance Institute and pay the insurance premiums themselves, in accordance with the advance payments set for them.

What happens in case of late payment?

The National Insurance Institute clarifies that insurance premiums not paid on time accumulate fines and linkage differentials. Self-employed individuals who have incurred a debt can contact the National Insurance Institute to settle it; in some cases, it is possible to request a reduction of fines and linkage.

"It is important to settle the debt as soon as possible to prevent it from growing further," the National Insurance Institute emphasizes.

Additionally, there is an option to reach a payment arrangement, where paying the debt in installments bears interest.

Those who are not employed: individuals who are not employed may also be required to pay insurance premiums in certain cases, depending on their status and circumstances. These funds are used to finance the social security system and to pay various benefits.
