Curry was born in Cheshire, England, and became known first and foremost for portraying the character of the mad scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He played the role in the original stage production in London in 1973, continued with it to Broadway, and recreated it in the iconic 1975 film adaptation — a role that turned him into a cultural icon. Alongside Rocky, he made his mark in dozens of other roles. Among others, he played the concierge Mr. Hector in the film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, as well as the clown Pennywise in the original television adaptation of It. At the same time, he starred in a long line of films, series, and theater plays. As part of his success, he was even nominated for an Emmy Award.
In 2012, when he was 66, he suffered a severe stroke while at his home. Following the event, he suffered from partial paralysis on his left side, speech impairment, and was confined to a wheelchair, which led to a significant reduction in his public appearances.
