Having finished his summer vacation after winning the World Cup with the Spanish national team, Marc Cucurella held his first training session on Monday at Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho. The 27-year-old left-back, who was acquired from Chelsea for 55 million euros, signed a contract until 2032 about two months ago and returned to La Liga after five years in England (one at Brighton and four at Chelsea).
In an interview with the Blancos' channel, he said:
"It is a great honor. I don't think many people can say they have worn this shirt. We have seen great legends here, it is a club with a rich history, the biggest in Europe. Being here today is a privilege, an honor, and above all, a reward for all the effort I invested throughout my career. I waited a long time, the road felt long, but finally, I am here."
The defender continued:
"As a player, and as a child just starting to play football, it is very hard to refuse the opportunity to play for such a club. When the opportunity arrived, I didn't hesitate for even a second. As a spectator, I saw all those magical nights, the comebacks at the Bernabeu, and all the Champions League trophies they won. To now get the chance to experience this up close and be part of it is a huge responsibility, but also a very exciting and important challenge."
On what he brings to the club:
"Intensity, character, joy of life, a bit of everything. I am a person who works very hard. With players of this talent level, if we are united and become a great team both on and off the pitch, I think we can achieve great things."
On Mourinho:
"A lot of confidence and a lot of naturalness. We need to do on the pitch what we know how to do, and above all, enjoy it. I think we all want to win and that this will be a great year."
On the welcome:
"Everything is going great. I was waiting to meet my teammates. I already spoke with some of them who sent me messages. I received a very warm welcome. It was a hard and long day, but I am already starting to get into the swing of things and train gradually, because the good things are just around the corner."
