The television world gathered this morning for the premiere of the new season of "Life is a Hard Period" (HaChaim Hem Tkufa Kasha), the series by Hanoch Daum and Keshet 12, which will air this coming Tuesday. The series, which brings to the screen a fictional and amusing version of Daum's life, returns for another season with a host of familiar characters and plotlines that continue to deal with family life, Israeli society, and the gaps between the different worlds in which he lives.
At the center of the series is Hanoch, who lives with his wife Efrat and their three children in the settlement of Avindav. The plot is based on Daum's bestselling book of the same name and uses experiences from his personal life as a basis for the stories presented on screen.
The series deals quite a bit with the complex identity of the main character and his attempt to navigate between worlds that, apparently, do not always get along with each other. Daum is presented as a settler who does not observe the Sabbath but still comes to the synagogue, as a person who does not wear a kippah, and as someone who moves between religious and secular identity.
